Snow White & Rose Red Character Descriptions

Snow White and Rose Red
Character Descriptions

Snow White and Rose Red          Snow White and Rose Red are sisters. Snow White is 16 years old and Rose Red is 15. They are poor and live in a cottage with their mother. The cottage is in the Black Forest in Germany in the 1800s. There are no other people living in the forest. Their only friends are each other and the animals that live in the forest. Snow White and Rose Red are good, happy, cheerful and busy girls. They hold hands wherever they go and have promised to always be together. Snow White and Rose Red always try to help others in trouble.
Snow White      Snow White is the eldest. She is tall and thin with dark brown hair and light blue eyes. She likes to wear her hair in braids. Snow White is the shy, quiet, gentle sister. Her movements are small and graceful. She spends her days helping with the housework and reading to her mother. She is the caretaker of the family and watches out for Rose Red when they go into the forest. Snow White is happy to live a quiet, peaceful life in the forest so long as she can be with her mother and sister. She learns that helping others brings her great happiness.

Rose Red
Rose Red is the younger sister and she is more adventurous. She is also tall and thin, but with shoulder length, straight red hair and green eyes. Rose Red likes to run, pick flowers and catch butterflies. She picks flowers for her mother every morning and always has a smile on her face. Rose Red will often act without thinking in a situation. She is the more outgoing, friendlier of the two and is the leader/risk taker in their forest walks and adventures. Her movements are quicker and larger. Rose Red would like to stay with her family in the forest forever, but would be willing to live anywhere her sister goes. She also learns that helping others brings great happiness.

Bear/Prince
The bear looks like a large, brown bear with a broad head and black eyes. Although he looks like a bear, he acts more like a human because he is really a prince who has been turned into a bear by the wicked dwarf. The bear is very nice to Snow White and Rose Red and lets them play games with him. He is friends with the girls and watches out for them. He makes the family feel safe. The only time the bear is mean is when he hits the wicked dwarf who stole his treasure and kills him. As a bear, he seeks warmth in the girls’ cottage at night and tries to protect his treasure from the dwarf during the day.

Once the dwarf is dead, the bear turns back into a handsome prince. The prince is kind, rich and dressed all in green. He is 19 years old with blonde hair and dark green eyes. The prince is tall, thin and slightly muscular. His goals in the story are to change back from being a bear, get back his treasure from the dwarf, and marry Snow White. He does not want to stay a bear forever. He learns that riches don’t matter if you love someone.

Dwarf
The dwarf is a small, greedy, rude, unhappy, wicked old man. He has pointy ears, a long, white beard, a big, round nose and big hands and feet. His eyes are orange. He wears black boots, brown pants and a dark gold shirt. The dwarf can turn people into animals. He steals the prince’s treasure and turns him into a bear. The dwarf hates little girls. He is constantly getting into trouble; for example, his beard gets trapped in a tree and he gets caught in fishing line. Whenever Snow White and Rose Red try to help him, he yells at them for being clumsy and calls them names like "toadstool". All the dwarf wants is more and more treasure – pearls, coins, and gems. He can’t stand the thought of being poor. In the end, he learns that greed can kill you.
